One of 3954 newsletters sent to Sir Newdigate of Arbury, Warwickshire from Whitehall, London. Sir Joseph Williamson (1633-1701) originated these letters for intelligence reasons. Williamson's newsletters differed from the commercial newsletters of a later date, such as O'Dyers. In order to obtain information of a secret nature, which in turn was dispensed to certain civil military officers, persons of power and authority in the counties, Customs officers, Naval Storekeepers, Postmasters, Governors of garrisons, Commanders of Fleets, Privy Councilors and officeholders in London, certain persons were paid for their information.
