C-31These papers consist of Briquet's calculations of the length of time over which "identical" varieties of a watermark occur. These are not identical in the sense that they all consist of a single paper stock, but rather that they share morphological details. For each watermark facsimile published, he calculated the span (earliest to latest) over which the examples were found. The fruit of these calculations is presented in Briquet's "Avant-Propos," pp. xx-xxiv. [return]

F.The cartons of unpublished tracings (on ca. 12 x 9 mm tracing paper) contain 15.5 x 13 mm envelopes catagorized by type (e.g. "Agneau Pascal"). The envelopes appear to have been used for other purposes at other times since on the other side of the envelope are usually references to a location (e.g. "Rome") and to a number (e.g. "400"), but these have no correspondence to the current contents. The tracings are pencil on tracing paper, include laid lines and attendant chainlines, a Briquet number, in red (not corresponding to the published numbers, but apparently accession numbers?), information about distances between chainlines, and the archive from which the tracing derives (e.g. "Arch. nos Palermi"). Not all are dated.
The published tracings are very close reproductions of the original tracings (i.e., faithful to the size of the watermark and the spacing of chains and laid lines); occasionally the chainlines are slightly "off," e.g. Anneau 692: when the watermark tracing is superimposed and aligned with the reproduction, the attendant chain on the right has been straightened in the reproduction and is from 1 mm (at the top) to 5 mm (at the bottom) wider than the tracing. In addition to the red [accession?] number that is found on the unpublished watermarks, the published tracings have also the number corresponding to their number in Les Filigranes, usually in green, but in some cases in red with a circle around it.
